That's the highest number in the 23 years state officials have kept records.

The Charlotte Observer and The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday that Wake County leads the state, with about 3,700 registered home schools teaching an estimated 7,500 students. A state report released Monday shows Mecklenburg in second, with just under 3,000 schools and about 6,300 students.

All 100 North Carolina counties had home-schoolers, with just over 77,000 children participating. That's up from about 71,600 the previous year.

Home-schoolers from across North and South Carolina meet next week in Charlotte for an annual conference.

http://www.witn.com/home/headlines/52427997.htmlThe Hardman Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06295076824751025571noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1112176131727946086.post-10363336020642247652009-05-14T15:44:00.000-07:002011-03-22T06:06:56.879-07:00Access Books and More - offers new and used homeschool curriculum, textbooks, teacher editions and supplemental materials for grades K-12 in all subject areas. TYPES OF TESTS:

Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) This is a top-rated nationally standardized achievement test designed to evaluate thinking skills. This test takes less time to administer than the Stanford and permits a wider grade range of students to be tested at the same time. This test is considered to be among the most difficult tests. Grades 3-8 may be tested together; grades 9-12 may be tested together. Qualifications for test administration: a 4-year baccalaureate degree in any field. Directions for administration are supplied at no additional cost. Tests are supplied and returned to suppliers for scoring. Tests are given orally through grade 2.

Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) Not to be confused with the Scholastic Aptitude Test (also SAT). A top-rated nationally standardized test for K-12. Listening skills are included for K - 8th grade. The test administrator must have a baccalaureate degree in any field, plus meet additional test administering guidelines. The publisher of this test has strict guidelines that must be followed when testing any relative. The test supplier can supply you with specifics before ordering the test. Qualifications for test administrators and directions for administration must be purchased.

California Achievement Test (CAT) This test is popular among Christian schools and home schools because it contains more traditional values than other tests listed. Parents administer the test and send it back to be scored and returned. You must request percentile scoring and /or stanine results or you will only receive raw scores and grade equivalents. This test is intended for grades 2 - 12.

California Achievement Test (CAT/5) This test is an updated version of the CAT. For grades K-12; tests reading, language, spelling, mathematics, study skills, science and social studies.

Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) The CTBS tests all academic areas including reading, language arts, spelling, math, science, social studies and reference skills for grades 1 - 12. With the CTBS scores, you receive a professional critique.

Personalized Achievement Summary System (PASS) The states of Alaska, New York, and North Carolina have officially approved the PASS Test for purposes of state reporting. Testing results show overall achievement as well as performance in each subject. The test is standardized and children's scores are compared with both national and home-schooling populations. Because of the inherent stress of testing and our informal approach to teaching lower elementary grades, the PASS Test is available for only Grades 3 through 8.
It has gone by so fast. The book store is busy and a lot is happening. We have been invited to many book fairs nationwide. I wanted to take this time to help you prepare for the large book fairs in your state.

With the school year ending, now is the time to evaluate the past year. What worked, what did not, where to make changes, and did I do enough or was it overkill? Do you have any learning gaps that will need worked on this year? Now is also a great time to look at each child’s learning style. Did I use the right curriculum? Do I have any items put away already for this coming year? Take a look at those items and evaluate them now.

Do some research on the books that are interesting. The internet is a great way to do this. Ask around to find out what the strengths and weakness of the program were for others. And remember if it is one person’s strength or weakness, it may not be yours. Also, stop by your local home school stores to get a look see.

Now you will have an idea of what to look for at the book fairs. Most are large in size and can be overwhelming if we do not set goals before we go. Write those goals down and make a list of items you will need or want to take a look at. What questions would you like to ask the vendor? Don’t forget most of these conferences last a few days and you don’t have to see it all the first day. Remember, you don’t ever have to buy anything..

Goal setting is the greatest step to complete to have a great time at the book fair.

It is a great time to take in a few conference speakers. Pick a few that will meet your needs for this year. It is impossible to listen to each one, and if you did, you would be on overload. Don’t forget every program is for a specific group of people. What works for one does not always for the others. Do what works for you.

Set a budget. Get with your husband and take it to the Lord. This will help to avoid impulse buying. You may save on shipping and handling, but when you get home you may never use the book. Make sure what you buy fits your needs that way you will be excited to teach from it. Prioritize your list. What are the items of most importance to come home with?

You could spend a full day(s) at the book fair and plan for such. Make plans for the kids: sign your children up for events at the fair, network with friends, find a sitter, pack lunches. Make sure everyone has on good walking shoes. Pack a pen or pencil for notes and phone numbers of new contacts.

Lastly, take a deep breath. You have done a lot of work to get this far. Pat yourself on the back. You will be far ahead of those that don’t plan. Enjoy.

Thanks to all those that make these events possible.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:11;" >
